Also known as Box lock or Night
Latch, Rim locks are locks that are mounted onto the surface of the door
and the body of the lock is seen on the side of the door on which it is
mounted. A rim lock is screwed to the face of the door and latches
automatically when you close the door unless it is held open with the
snib. Unless the lock also has the term deadlock attached, it can be
opened by turning a knob. Its been more than 100 years that Rim locks
have been around and were imported from Europe and England before a lock
industry was developed in the United States in the 1830's. Today, Rim
Locks are an essential part of door hardware which enhances the look of
the door because of its ornately carved designs.
However, according to some, a rim lock should not be the main lock
chosen for security on an external door because it is not too difficult
to interfere with it. It is more suitable for use on a side or inside
doors. It can also be used in front or back door in conjunction with top
and bottom bolts. Rim lock is operated by a key and can be opened from
either the inside or the outside of the door. Another advantage of this
type of lock is that the rim locks are reversible unless otherwise
specified so they can be used on either right or left handed doors. To
reverse handing, just remove the screw in the case and flip over the
latch bolt.
