Gate Hardware

Gate Hardware
Gates are of prime importance for the safety of any office, house, resort, or any other property or building. Gates not only serve the purpose of fixing the limits, but they are also impression builders as they are the first thing a visitor comes in contact with while entering a building, etc.
Gate hardware is indispensable for maintaining the proper functionality of the gates, along with providing them with an impressive look. We can say that gate hardware injects life into the gate and makes it lively and operative.

The modern gate hardware items are not merely utilitarian, but they are the intricately designed pieces of art that lend an aesthetic appeal to the gate. Nowadays, there exists a vast variety of gate hardware items. Let's get acquainted with a few primary items out of them:

1) Gate Latches: Gate latches are small steel bars that are used to fasten or join adjacent segments of fencing having the functionality of opening and closing and are called gates. Latches are basically temporary gate locks without any key. Owing to their field of application, latches are generally sturdily built from metals like wrought iron, stainless steel, etc. and are made corrosion resistant. The main types of latches in use include paddle latch, gravity latch, side bolt latch, and thumb lever latch.

2) Gate Hinges: Gate hinges are the gate hardware devices which allow the free back and forth swing movement of the gate. The quantity, type, and durability of the gate hinges to be installed depend upon the factors like gate traffic and its application area. The common types of gate hinges in use these days include tee hinges, butterfly hinges, and half-strap hinges.

3) Gate Handles: Gate handles, as the name suggests are the hardware items required for opening and closing the gate. They provide a medium to grip the gate if somebody wants to open or close it. The durability of the gate handle should be proportional to its weight, so that it would not bend or break while pulling and pushing. Gate handles are generally made of materials like iron, aluminum, steel, and wood.

4) Gate Bolts: Bolts are mainly used in gates for the purpose of joining other gate hardware items like hinges, latches, handles, etc. to the gate. Gate bots are generally fabricated from iron, galvanized steel, forged steel, and bronze. The main types of gate bolts include barrel bolts, slide bolts, deadbolts, and cane bolts.

5) Gate Wheels: Earlier the gate wheels were mainly found in sliding gates, but nowadays they are widely used in swing gates as well. Wheels play a vital role in the functioning of gates by facilitating the comfortable movement of the gate, especially large and bulky gates. The gate wheels should be selected with care because if the wheels are not according to the gate, they get worn away very quickly.

6) Gate Springs: Gate springs are mechanical gate hardware devices meant for closing the gate without any manual assistance. Gate springs are most effective for small gates like a garden gate or stile. The tension of the spring can be adjusted to determine the closing rate of the gate. Gate springs are generally made from iron.

7) Gate Hooks: Gate hooks perform more or less the same function as the gate latches. The basic difference is that the gate hooks are much simpler in operation than the gate latches. Gate hooks are are very durable and can be easily installed. They are generally made from materials like iron, aluminum, brass, etc. The one disadvantage of hooks is that, unlike latches, they are not available in such wide range of designs and functionalities.

Some significant considerations regarding Gate Hardware

Given below are some significant considerations regarding gate hardware. Read them and get benefited.

Installation
Installation of gate hardware seems to be a very cumbersome job, but it is not so in actual. It is a rather uncomplicated task to do. What you require to install your gate hardware are just some simple tools, little skill, and some time. The tools required include a hacksaw, clamp, cordless drill, plier, wrench, screwdriver, and a few sundries at most. If you have small children in your home, make sure that you install hardware items like gate springs and gate latches that increase the safety.

Sagging
Many gates start to sag as time passes. You might have noticed that as you pushed your gate expecting it would open smoothly as usual, it eventually get stuck in the halfway. Most of the people come across such problems. But, if this happens, there is nothing wrong with your door; the door's size has not increased, it's still of the same size. Actually, the time has come for you to replace your gate hardware. You can also install an anti sag kit which consists of toe blocks and two cable connected brackets mounted at diagonal points across a gate. But, the best option is to replace the complete door hardware to get a long time solution. Ensure the quality of the new hardware that you install.

Environmental Factor
As gates are generally installed in the outdoors, the surrounding environment is a significant consideration in its selection. So, you should determine the kind of door hardware you want to install according to the climatic conditions of the place where you stay. Say you live in an area where there is a lot of moisture in the air, so you have to install the hardware items made from a material like galvanized steel or those having a rustproof coating over them.

Child-Protective Latch
The people who have small children in their home need to be a little tricky in installing the latches on the gate. This consideration is more significant in the case of a gate that opens in a pool area. The latch should be such installed that it remains outside the reach of the child. Another good option is to install a second latch at above the normal height; so that even if the child opens the first latch, he/she would not be able to go beyond the gate due to the second latch, which is much above his/her height.
