Door Screws To select the right fastener,
screw, nail or connector in door hardware is a crucial task. With so
many options available, it is hard to know which one to choose from. We
give below a range of different varieties of door screws used in fixing
door hardware:
Sheet Metal Screw This
type of screw fastens thin metal to thin metal. The screw can have flat,
oval, round or binding heads. Typical lengths of these screws range from
1/8" to 2". Starting holes are either punched or drilled and
should be slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Machine Screw
The machine screws have round, oval, flat and fillister heads. This
screw is intended to be screwed into pre threaded holes in metal. The
screw is available in coarse (24 threads per inch) and fine (32 threads
per inch) sizes. The round head type is the most commonly used one while
the flat head type is used when the top must be flush with the surface.
Oval headed machine screws are used in countersunk holes while Fillister
heads are used in counter-bored holes.Set Screw This
type of screw prevents bolts from loosening due to vibration. The screw
which is thumb type can be tightened by hand. Headless set screws are
tightened with the help of a screwdriver. The Square head set screws are
tightened with a wrench while the Socket set screws are tightened with a
hex wrench. Wood Screw This
type of screw is usually made of unhardened steel, stainless steel,
aluminum or brass and can have a choice of several coatings like
bright-finished, zinc-, cadmium- or chrome-plated. Threads on this screw
run from the point along 3/4 of the length and heads are slotted. Lag Screw This
screw is also known as lag bolt. This screw is similar to wood screws
but stronger. This type of screw is used when ordinary screws are too
short or too lightweight and when increased gripping power is needed. Drywall/Deck Screw This
type of screw is used when installing drywall or decking material. The
screw is coated to prevent rust. Power Drive Fastener This
type of fastener is designed specifically for use with power equipment.
This fastener has a self-tapping or self-drilling design. This type of
screw includes a wide variety of special-purpose designs. Turnbuckle The
turnbuckle is used to tighten wire or for bracing doors. This type of
screw consists of a barrel-shaped metal device with a threaded rod
inserted into each end. Rods have eyes at both ends while some other
types have a hook on one end and an eye on the other. Screw Eye/Hook The
basic difference between a screw eye and a hook is that a screw eye
consists of screw thread at one end and a ring at the other while a
screw hook consists of screw thread at one end and a hook at the other. Carriage Bolt This
type of screw has a square shoulder under the head that pulls into soft
materials like wood and prevents the bolt from turning while the nut is
tightened. The screw has coarse, partial threads and a smooth, rounded
head. Stove Bolt This
type of screw's head can be flat, oval or round. It is used to hold
light metals or wood. The heads are slotted for a screwdriver. Machine Bolt The
machine bolt always come with regular, square, hex, button or
countersunk heads. Square heads fasten joints where bolt requirements
are not too severe. Button heads work best where smooth surfaces are
necessary while countersunk heads are used for flush surfaces. Threaded Rod The
threaded rod is with a continuous thread from one end to the other and
available in different diameters. This type of screw is used where
extra-long bolts are required and can be bent to make U-bolts, eye bolts
and J-bolts. Washer Washer
is a small metal circle that provides a hard surface against which you
tighten a screw. The washer matches the size of the screw it is being
used with and is available in flat, countersunk or flush shapes. Nut This
type of screw is used tighten the bolt. Most common are hex and square
nuts. Another variant is the wing and knurled nuts, also used where
frequent adjustment or disassembly is necessary. There is the locknut
type which has a self-locking feature that allows it to be locked into
position without additional lock washers, cotter pins or locking wire. Cotter Pin Cotter
Pin This is a versatile fastening device, which is made of ferrous and
nonferrous wire. It is available in various diameters and lengths. It
inserts into a hole. An eye on one end prevents the cotter pin from
going through while prongs at the other end are bent back to lock the
pin. Rivet The
Rivet is a type of screw that securely fastens something that can be
reached from just one side. This is a multi-grip type of screw which
expands to fill over-sized and irregular holes and self-adjusts for
misaligned holes. Usually used in metal, plastic and composite
materials. This type of screw has dome, countersunk and large flange
head screws. |
