Butt/Mortise Hinges

Mortise Hinges
The butt/mortise hinge is a popular type of hinge used on interior and exterior doors because it is neat looking. Butt Hinges or Mortise Hinges are usually available in threes or fours and are inset (mortised) into the door and frame. Butt hinges are composed of two plates which are attached to abutting surfaces of a door or a cabinet and joined by a pin. Both leaves of the butt hinge are mortised (cut) into the edge of a door and frame. Half-mortised industrial hinges are usually butt hinges where only one of the leaves is mortised or cut into the door and frame.

Features of Butt Hinges
  • Butt Hinges fit between the butt of the door and the frame.
  • Only the hinge pin is exposed on the inside of the door.
  • The most common type of Butt Hinge is the loose pin hinge that has a removable pin for easy removal of the door.
Butt Hinges can affect the look, durability, and performance of your fine door. Don't compromise while choosing a Butt Hinge for your door. It is better to choose a high-quality extruded brass hinge. Cheaper stamped hinges are also available which are made by pressing thin sheet metal around the pin to form the knuckle. While residential butt hinges are usually made of steel, mortise hinges for outswing doors are often made of brass or stainless steel base to prevent corrosion or rust.

How to choose a Butt Hinge?
Since Butt Hinges affect the look of your room, we give below an idea on how to choose the right one. Always try to choose a hinge size that leaves at least 1/8 inches of wood at the back of the mortise or this area will be too fragile. Another option is to choose a hinge that reaches all the way across the stile.

Where to locate the hinges?
It is always pleasing to the eye if you relate the hinge locations to the rails (left). However, this may not be possible on doors with thin rails (right).

Always plan ahead while choosing and purchasing hinges during the design stage of a project.
