Biometric Security System

Biometric Security System
The biometric method is considered to be a high level security measure used for restricting door access. There are various methods of authentication used in biometric security system. The system utilizes information specific to an individual's body to ensure a high degree of security, which will make it difficult or rather impossible for a stranger to impersonate that person.

Working Principle
The biometric methods are used for personal authentication and door access security. There are several methods that exist for for biometric identification. The most prominent and emerging technologies that are used today utilize many features like the face, fingerprints, hand shape, the voice and the iris. Whatever technology is being used, each of these recognition systems use some kind of sensors to collect an image, either of a fingerprint, facial, or iris image. The images are then matched to a database of registered users.

Each of these methods possess particular characteristics and can be categorized in terms of usability and security.

The major factors that are considered for assessing usability are:
  • Simplicity for the user
  • Speed of authentication
  • Feeling of resistance
  • Level of false-rejection rate
The major factors that are considered for assessing security are:
  • Difficulty of forgery
  • Difficulty of acquiring biological data
  • Level of false-acceptance rate
There is yet another method of biometric identification known as the finger-vein authentication method. It is considered as the most suitable method for limiting door access by a large number of people.

Application
The biometric method is widely used for restricting door access. Some of the application area of the system include:
  • Home
  • Small Offices
  • Business Organizations
